Brief

A portal offering legal aid online faced the problem of a drop in Google traffic.

Plan

1. Identifying the problem

The portal allows visitors to ask legal questions and receive answers to them from lawyers. Because users often asked similar questions (formulating them a little differently), the website generated many pages containing overlapping information.
The numerous pages with similar questions were the reason why the website had low rankings in Google. From the search engine’s perspective, the site was low-quality.

We analyzed the website and identified the cause of its low rankings.

2. Choosing the main page

Most of the website traffic came from the Q&A section, and there is no way to completely block this page from indexing. We parsed all the pages, collected the queries they were ranked for, clustered the pages, and determined the leading page for each cluster.

We grouped similar pages together and chose the main page for every group.

3. Closing low-value pages from indexing

On the leading pages, we posted the most detailed of the answers to similar questions. Also, we used the NoIndex and NoFollow tags to hide the low-value pages. As a result, 500,000 pages were closed from indexing, and the search engines were left with only one high-quality page to index. The overall value of the website increased, and that led to traffic growth.

We identified all the less valuable pages and hid them from the search engines.

4. Conducting a technical audit

For instance, because of some incorrect settings, the mobile version of the site was not indexed well – many pages were excluded from the search engines' indexes. Considering that optimization for mobile is very important for Google, and mobile traffic grows rapidly in all niches, that was one of the most significant technical improvements.

Results

Quantity does not always convert into quality, which was proven in our case, too. It is important that all website pages are useful, contain a full answer to a search query, and do not duplicate other pages.
As soon as we removed all the 500,000 low-value pages from the search engines' indexes, we saw immediate results. Our efforts led to a 300% growth in visitor traffic.
